Grammar:Subjunctive mood (虚拟语气)

  Learning aims: At the end of the class, students should be able to:
 
  1. summarize 5 rules of subjunctive mood by observing different sentences.
 
  2. understand the function of subjunctive mood in context.
 
  3. use the new patterns in new situations.
 
  4. realize the importance of cherishing the present.
 
  Important & difficult learning points
 
  1. use the subjective mood---“if clause” --- to describe unreal situations.
 
  2. master 3 rules of Subjunctive Mood used in objective clauses after “wish” .
 
  Teaching methods:

  Teaching procedures:
 
  Step 1. Greetings and presentation.
 
  Good afternoon, boys and girls. Now I’d like to tell you about my wishes.
 
  1. I wish I were as tall as Yao Ming. If I were as tall as Yao Ming, I might be a famous basketball player now.
 
  2. I wish I were the owner of the following pictures. If I were their owner, I would be very happy now.
 
 
  Step 2. Can you summarize the definition of SUBJUNCTIVE MOOD after reading the above sentences? Try to fill in the blanks.
 
  虚拟语气用以表示____________愿望,或与事实______的假设、想象等非真实的观念。 这些特点决定了它必须使用特殊的动词形式。

  Step 3. Presentation of SUBJUNCTIVE MOOD after “wish”
 
  Now read more examples and give a summary:
 
  1、虚拟语气在宾语从句中的用法
 
  I wish every day were my birthday.
 
  I wish I had bought a flying car before.
 
  I wish that we could fly in the future.
 
  summary: 在动词wish后的宾语从句中, 虚拟语气用来表示_________________, 或将来不太可能实的主观愿望。
 
  Key: 与现在或过去的事实相反
 
  Now read more examples and summarize the basic rules:
 
  I wish I had no homework today.
 
  I wish that I were a bird now.
 
  Rule (1) 表示对现在情况的虚拟: 从句谓语动词用________________________。
 
  Key: 过去式 (be动词一般用were)
 
  Step 4. Practice

  Rule (2) 表示对过去情况的虚拟: 从句谓语动词常用_________________。
 
  KEY: “had+过去分词”

  Rule (3) 表示对将来的主观愿望: 从句动词形式常用“ might/_____________”。
 
  KEY: would/could+动词原形

  RULE 1. 与现在事实相反, 从句的谓语用动词用: _____________________,
 
  主句谓语用_________ /should/ could/ might +动词原形。

  Step 6. Now read a poem and give me a summary:

  If you were a teardrop in my eye,

  If I were to become a bird in the future, I would fly high to touch the sky.
 
  Will I? No.
 
  Therefore, I won’t fly.
 
  RULE 2. 与将来事实相反, 从句的谓语用动词的: ________________________,
 
  主句谓语用_________ /should/ could/ might +动词原形。
 
  Key: 过去式或 were to do或should do; would
 
  For an example, If you killed all the terrorists/If you should kill all the terrorists/If you were to kill all the terrorists, the world would be in peace in the future..
 
  Step 7. PRACTICE
 
  Now correct the mistakes
 
  If one of my students becomes king of our country in the future, I will become the king’s master. By then I would be respected by people as king’s master and I shall be proud of him. 如果我的学生有朝一日成为国王,我就是国王的老师,到那时我将作为国王的老师受到人们的尊敬。我将为他感到自豪。
